Some twists and turns, some predictable and noticeable early on though somewhat well hidden. This mostly reminds me of Sleepy Hollow (1999) with Johnny Depp but without the fantasy of it all, so if you like that one you will like this one and vice versa. Though as they are very similar in build you will have one movie partially spoilt by the other.
The staging is good in the movie and shows some budget has been put down. The acting and choice of actors was good, very well suitable to that time, perhaps missing a large harsh drilling instructor or something along those lines to round off the cast of characters.
2 hours long, a little slow in the middle but if you like crime/thrillers nothing to be worried about as you will like it, it is well crafted enough to keep your attention if you like movies.
For those who like mystery this is a good replacement of Sherlock Holmes with a rougher finish with the gore left in.
Why not 5 stars? If this had been its first of the kind it would have been 5 stars - all parts are there, but it falls short in the rounding of it, maybe its even edited short (my first thought was that it was a little long, but seing it in reverse giving some moments a little more time could have both made it better and made it too slow - so im ambivalent there is what im saying), the staging, costumes, acting, is all there, the time related patriacrchy aswell as Gillian doing what is at a first glance an over the top moment, but that rapidly starts ringing true and elevating that scene.
Am i really about to talk about the weather? Pulling in the harshness of the cold and the brittle snow layered with ice could have been good, so could had having a music number by Lea earlier that our protagnoist (or one of them) missed so as to make a chance discoery more logical later on. Small things but there are several that keeps it from a 5 to a 4.
